NEW! I now also offer a specialized Data Recovery – Photo Recovery Service!
You will always first receive a price quote from me after I have examined your corrupted photos! Actual
cost depends on issue at hand. Can be as low as $0.10 per file for header type damage that can be repaired in batch, up to $10
per file in case if visual damage that has to be corrected file-by-file, manually. Minimum order is $20.
This is not an automated service, I examine and repair photos manually. These things take time and depending on queue
and work load may take from a few hours to a few days.
RAW photos too! Apart from JPEG I also repair RAW photos on a regular basis (Canon CR2, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, etc.).
Note that some times I can only export these as TIFF files.
Uploading Files:
Failure to comply with the following mandatory ‘requests’ means I will simply delete the file(s) from my server. I am aware this sounds rather unwelcoming and unfriendly but it’s not meant that way.
- ZIP corrupt file(s) plus a reference file: photo shot with the same camera using the same settings (resolution, quality, white balance, etc.). Usually the pictures taken right before or after the corrupt photo are shot with the same settings. Preferably name the ZIP file, yourname.ZIP.
- Provide a short explanation of the problem. Provide context. So for example explain if the files became corrupt after recovery, or after copying, or if they became corrupt without apparent reason. ‘Can not open’ or ‘photo is corrupt or half grey’ is NOT an explanation of a problem, it is stating the obvious.
- Upload a few photos only initially! I will diagnose those and we’ll take it from there. There is little use in uploading 100’s of photos that are beyond repair.
- If you share a ZIP file with me (Google Drive etc.) email me (joep@disktuna.com) the non password protected URL to the shared FOLDER. So in other words, I want to be able to access the folder containing all the files so that I am not forced to download images one at the time.
And with all that out of the way, I’d love to give it a try!
Online Photo Repair Service File Upload |
---|
Note: Upload supports drag and drop.
DROP ZIP FILE HERE.Following restrictions apply: Max file size 64 MB, for larger ZIP files use file sharing service like Google Drive. Include a sample/reference file, shot with same camera and settings (resolution, quality, white balance, etc.) please!
JPEG Repair Service File Upload
* – If blank or nonsense: You’ll get no answer. |
With regards to the sample / reference file:
- The image file must be undamaged.
- The image file must be created by the same device (camera or mobile phone).
- The picture must have the same resolution and should have been taken with the same settings.
- The picture should NOT be edited using a photo editing software as it will re-encode the photo and make corruption permanent.
Data Recovery from memory cards:
Although it is not a service I primarily offer, I occasionally agree to performing the actual photo or video recovery myself. In this case I need access to the disk image of the memory card via a file sharing service. In case of higher capacity cards this often impractical though. You can then opt to send me the actual memory card but note that I will not return the card. I will quote a price per card, not per photo. Card needs to properly ID itself, I do not offer physical repairs or chip-off or off chip recovery. I now offer a photo recovery service even if your SD Card (or USB thumbdrive) is unstable (keeps disconnecting) or does not properly ID!
NEW: I now offer photo recovery as a flat fee, no cure no pay service.
Types of JPEG file corruption
JPEG is a standard, a specification. A standard that describes how data inside JPEGs is stored. A JPEG is typically a chain of ‘markers’. One marker points to the next, then the next, etc.. Each marker serves a different purpose. For example, a marker can contain a comment. Another contains EXIF data which can contain all kinds of information on the image file: data taken, geo info, camera model etc.
The most important marker I guess, contains the actual image data. Roughly 5% of a JPEG file is meta data, the rest, 95% is the actual image. The 5% meta data is found at the start of the file and is also called the header.
Corrupt header
A typical symptom of a damaged header is that the file is not recognized as a JPEG file and that it can’t be opened at all. To fix this kind of damage I also need an intact JPEG file, shot with the same camera using the same settings. If only some data inside the header is corrupt, depending on the image viewer you may get a more relevant error message, like “invalid Huffman table” (which is required to decompress image data).
Corrupt image data
When the image data itself is corrupt, the JPG will probably load, however the image will be distorted. If a portion of the image data is missing (truncated file), part of the image will show. The latter is quite common after using photo recovery or file recovery software.
Another type of damage is bit corruption: Data inside the image ‘stream’ is corrupt. This can result in the image shifting and color errors.
How do I do it?
I am using a number of tools that are constantly under development. I call my tools the JPEG Repair Toolkit. Apart from that I use a 3rd party hex editor (HxD) and several photo editors for post processing (Paint.net, PhotoDemon, Photoshop).
Other formats like CR2, NEF etc..
I am frequently able to repair RAW photos like CR2 or NEF as well. Of course I can try extracting embedded JPEGs but also repair is often possible to a degree if your RAW files refuse to open even when not showing any previews. It is sometimes necessary though to convert these files to TIFF format. For repairing RAW photos from various brand cameras I wrote the Universal Header Repair Tool (U.H.R.T.). It allows me to research files, come up with a solution and then apply that that multiple files. This reduces cost when having to repair a larger number of RAW photos.
I can often repair RAW files that fail to open or even those that show corrupted images:

I tried to submit files using the section above, however I am unsure if it went through. Could you please let me know if I need to resubmit?
Thanks!
Ehm, no I don’t think so… If successfully uploaded it should actually tell you in green text.
Alternative would be to use Google Drive or something like https://gofile.io/welcome (free) and then email me the URL joep@disktuna.com
Working on it now and I will email you thanks!
G’day mate
I was wondering if you’d be able to look at some pictures from an old phone, found using some recovery software but coming up as corrupted. I have started the recovery process but it may be too much for me, but you might think they are recoverable. The entropy is within the 7.6 – 7.9 range or close to it (7 – 7.6)
Sure! Upload them or share using Google drive or similar and sent me the URL (joep@disktuna.com).
Made a google drive, emailing the url now!
G’day mate
Did you receive the email and able to access the drive alright?
Just uploaded a few files via the website incase the emails or drive aren’t working
Hello,
They’re all containing fragments of photos, there were only a few that contained a more or less complete image. So while entropy may be right, and they may contain JPEG data, there’s hardly complete files in there. What happened to the files, any idea? What type of drive are they stored on? I see this type of damage often if either:
1. File system is damaged. So meta data about files does not point to correct clusters. In this case you can not repair files. If I’d repair myphoto.jpg, myphoto.jpg would contain data from arbitrary clusters that have nothing to do with the original data. So in that case you’d try to recover them rather than repair individual files.
2. I have seen photos like this that were stored on (old) USB flash rives. Flash memory degrades over time. Meta data can become corrupt as a result, but actual file data too.
So, any background you can give would help to see if there’s a chance we can get them back.
P.S. I replied by email too.
Hello Joep!
I have come across your site while attempting to recover some files lost from an SD card after a photo session. I have used and formatted the card twice since the session in question before realizing there were missing photos from the session. I used Disk Drill for recovery and did seem to find some CR3 files from the correct date. This was promising until I realized I can’t open them, they are completely grey. I then downloaded your free trial of jpeg repair toolkit to see if I could extract the jpegs, but when I do so I get errors showing 0.00 entropy and “no jpeg SOI” for all the files. This means I am out of luck for recovery, correct? Because there is no entropy, there’s nothing else I can do? I just want to clarify that or what next steps might be (if any!) before updating my client.
Thank you very much for your help!
Melissa
Hello Melissa,
Yes, 0.00 entropy means DiskDrill recovered empty files. Did you format in camera and if so what model is your Canon?
Hi Joep,
Thank you for such a quick reply! Yes I have formatted the card twice in camera since that session. I have a canon eos r.
I asked because some cameras actually erase data when formatting. If I am not mistaking in your camera you’d have to explicitly select low level format for the camera to do that. If you did not use that option there’s no harm trying to recover the photos again. You could for example try ReclaiMe, the demo can show you previews and if it does the photos can probably be recovered. if not then there’s a money back guarantee by the developer (which isn’t me but I know they’re good for their word). https://www.disktuna.com/reclaime-file-recovery-software/.
If that does not recover the photos I have 2 more options: JpegDigger can maybe recover the full resolution JPEGs rather than original RAW CR2 format. JPEG Recovery LAB can recover CR2 as well, but be prepared that tool demands a lot of PC resources and takes a long time.
Ah I see! Thank you Joep, I will try ReclaiMe and see what happens!
I am having some photos but they corrupted.
They all are opening but some part of photo is having blank color.
Some are corrupted from down or some are from Side
I tried free version but don’t know how to operate. Please Help
Hello,
What exactly do you expect from me now? What exactly did you try? There’s several videos showing how to use the tool to repair half grey images, for example https://youtu.be/1YCa04-S6R4
Hi,
I have around 1000 images which is recovered through recovery software. But now it is not opening. I tried several online tools but result is same. In addition i dont have reference image, which you quoted above is mandatory because whole hard disk got deleted and every image has the same issue. Please guide for further.

Hello, photos are recovered from what, and using what software?
Ease Us Data Recovery Software
Try recover again with for example ReclaiMe or R-Studio.
Thanks for the suggestion. Will do it the same.
Thank you uploaded files included
I’m not sure what you mean .. I haven’t seen your files being uploaded ..
Hi Joep,
I sent some photos through that were recovered of SD card through wondershare. As photos were being downloaded to PC co-worker accidently deleted 4 days worth of photos. I was recommended your service, but not sure if photos will be recoverable, btw wondershare is awful and overated.
Regards
Peter
Hello,
Glanced through them, majority contains JPEG data as expected on a card full of JPEGs. Some I can extract intact, 2048×1536 resolution. With the headers of those I can probably make JPEG data in the other visible, but would be very time consuming.
If you have a PC available, I’d try recovering the files using JpegDigger instead: https://www.disktuna.com/jpegdigger-jpeg-photo-recovery/. Simply recover all photos, do not use the ‘free space only’ option. If you run with default options most of the corrupt files will be filtered, if you’re still missing some files then go into advanced settings > attempt file repair.
If you can find the photos using JpegDigger then this will be lots cheaper than me trying to make all the corrupt files you uploaded viewable – or – make one viewable and show you how I did that. The latter is possible but will be very time consuming.
One more option is you creating an image of the memory card, share using google drive or similar and have me recover them. Also lots cheaper than repairing each individual photo.
I just sent you my sample photos, and I hope that you examine it and make it possible to repair.
I will most certainly do my best!
Dear Joep,
We had a file that I could not repair even after having bought some dedicated, but obviously useless, software. You are a true magician, saving a for us very important family JPEG image. Thank you, thank you very much, also on behalf of my brother,
Bert Menco
Joep, I have a l large number of these. They were transferred to a thumb drive and when I transferred to another computer, I got the error message. I believe there was probably a problem with the thumb drive. Not all the files on the thumb drive were corrupted – only about half. Thanks,
I will have a look. I assume the files are no longer available from the original source?
Yeah, I looked, I am sorry. The file doesn’t contain any data, just zeros.
Looking forward to being able to recover 800+ corrupted JPG files for a friend!
How did they become corrupted, any idea?
hello, i purchased the toolkit then find most of the pics are “entropy> 7.98” , so my question is how could i decrept them? i have no idea
Hello,
I have no idea either because I haven’t seen any of the files, haven’t heard what’s wrong with them, how it happened and so forth.
I have like 60 photos that I need recovered. I tried with no luck how much do you charge to repair
Hello,
I can’t tell without looking at them. Submit 2 or 3 and I’ll have a look.
when it will be refunded joep
I have already submitted that and I expect them (Shareit) to process that today. Officially they do it within 24 hours.
hey i purchased a jpeg repair unit 1 for 22$ today only and simply I got 1 email that’s it can you explain me for what I have paid to u??
Hello,
Better to ask this type of questions per email and include order ID so I can look it up.
Anyway: A JPEG Repair UNIT is not $22, it’s $5.95 and it typically purchased after I repaired a photo manually. $22.95 is for the software JPEG-Repair Toolkit.
I see already. Yes you purchased a JPEG Repair UNIT. Not the software. Want me to refund that?
Yes, so you purchased JPEG Repair UNIT which is for my JPEG repair service. I refunded that. I See there’s an error on my homepage which links to wrong product. Sorry about that, it is now fixed.
